When the signal on the B arm is flashing, what is indicating?

Stop is required

Relay fault

Speed can increase (upgrade)

Understanding how a signal’s flashing indication relates to movement authority is key. When a signal arm is flashing, it signals a change in what you’re permitted to do, typically a step up in speed authority rather than a full stop or a fault condition.

So, if the B arm is flashing, that indicates you may increase your speed to the next higher posted limit within the block. It means the route ahead has been set for a higher speed, and you can accelerate accordingly as long as the signal remains clear and you stay within the posted limits. This isn’t telling you to stop, nor does it indicate a relay fault or anything about cable depth—the flashing indication is about allowable speed.
